Artificial insemination is a widely used method for treating infertility in certain conditions. For some people, artificial insemination works quite well. For others, it is not as effective. In order to determine whether or not artificial insemination may work for you, you will need to look at certain factors to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure.

For a woman to be a good candidate for artificial insemination, she needs to be able to produce healthy eggs that are viable for fertilization. A woman with poor quality eggs, or a woman that does not produce eggs will not be a good candidate. Women that have blockage or damage to their fallopian tubes, which can come from infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease, are also not a good candidate for artificial insemination. Medical conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) allow decrease the chances of becoming pregnant by artificial insemination, and other infertility treatments should probably be sought.

If the intended father of the child is to be providing the sperm, he also needs to have healthy sperm with good mobility. A high sperm count is also beneficial. Men that do not have sperm with good mobility or have a low sperm count are often not good candidates for using their sperm for the procedures, and other options should be explored. It is possible to use a sperm donor for the artificial insemination procedure if the couple is comfortable with this, providing that the woman has healthy eggs.

Couples that are infertile and desire a child are not the only ones that make good candidates for the artificial insemination procedure. Single women that are not in a relationship but desire a child, are also good candidates for this infertility treatment. The woman will of course have to have healthy eggs for the treatment to possibly be successful and use a sperm donor, but artificial insemination is an excellent choice for the single woman that desires to become pregnant.
