Invisalign® is able to straighten teeth through the use of invisible molds, which is one of its most unique features. It allows patients to have their teeth corrected in an aesthetically pleasing way, as compared to traditional metal braces.
The plastic molds that make up the Invisalign® system are referred to as aligners. Your dentist will make an initial mold of your teeth so that individual aligners are created for your mouth throughout the course of your treatment. They are intended to be worn at least 22 hours per day, with the exception of meal times.
Each Invisalign® retainer, or mold, places a small amount of pressure on the teeth in order to straighten them out. Different aligners are used approximately every two weeks until the desired result has been reached. Invisalign® can straighten teeth at the same pace as traditional braces, with many patients seeing much faster results.
Invisalign® has many benefits, one of which is a patient's ability to have better hygiene. Aligners are able to be taken out to floss and brush teeth in accordance with the patient's normal routine. This reduces the amount of restrictive foods that the patient is allowed to consume and can eliminate the staining effect that many people experience with traditional braces. Another great benefit of Invisalign® is their visual appearance. Patients no longer have to live with crooked teeth due to their reluctance to look like a teenager with metal braces. The aligners are also known to produce less pain and discomfort than their traditional counterpart, making them a popular choice.
The cost of Invisalign® can be as little as 20 percent more than traditional braces, depending upon the severity of the misalignment of the teeth and other important factors. Some insurance plans cover the cost of this type of treatment, which makes it an affordable option.
